Independence Day With Nothing To Celebrate

By George Onmonya Daniel

We easily get carried away by our unnecessary love for celebration and we forget there is nothing to celebrate.

I am not being pessimistic here but realistic and I don't want you to run away from REALITY. It is easy to want to run away from it and imagine what you want to imagine. Imagination is the fastest traveler.

You can imagine you are in heaven, just close your eyes, and Nigeria is that heaven. You can imagine 'things go better' as they have told us many decades ago, but things just got worse.

I wouldn't stop you from partying, yeah, you can party today. It is Independence Day. But no be who get money dey party? No be who get job dey party? No be who get hope say money go come tomorrow go party? No matter how we party we will back to reality on Tuesday after the party. Some of us live inside he reality. And the reality is that light no even dey.

Apart from that workers in Benue, Kogi and many states have not been paid salaries for months. Where is the party when no money for pocket? Nigeria is rescinding back into the abyss of backwardness and lack of direction. Don't you see it? The country simply has no plan.

Let's use this Independent anniversary to remind the owners of this country, the men and women in power now, that Nigeria did not just belong to them alone. Government and governance is not just about chopping money.

Celebration looks like everything is going well. It is not. But you can still celebrate and party.

I am at home watching MTV knowing that all the Independent messages are just sham and these politicians making these speeches don't care about much but their bank accounts.
