NNPC Scandal: Between Corruption Allegation And Office Rivalry

By George Onmonya Daniel

MR. FEMI FALANA (SAN), an ardent supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari, has asked the president to suspend the GMD of the NNPC, Mr. Maikanti Baru, pending investigation into the award of contracts worth more than $27 billion without following DUE PROCESS.

The Minister of State of Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, categorically stated in his leaked letter to the president that contracts were being awarded without the knowledge of the board which was not supposed to be so.

Now you cannot tell me Mr. Femi Falana doesn't know what he is talking about. It was clear in Ibe Kachikwu's letter that he accused the GMD. That's what we are talking about. He categorically stated $27 billion contracts and others being awarded without due process.

The office rivalry issue Kachikwu complained about is not our issue here, but the allegations of awarding such contracts without following "due process." Knowing the history and reputation of the NNPC pertaining corruption and collaboration to rip off the nation with politicians and the people they put in charge, it is not only suspicious but unacceptable that few people should single handedly award contracts sidelining others who should be part of the process.

Mr. Femi Falana has not only asked the President to resign as the Minister of Petroleum and handover to capable hands because of his busy schedule and illness, but to suspend the GMD until after investigations into the allegations against him.

That's the ideal thing to do. That's the proper thing to do, if this government doesn't want to tarnish its whole image of fighting against corruption.

For those writing all sorts of stuff on social media to exonerate the GMD without investigation into the matter, you cannot know more than Mr. Femi Falana pertaining these legal matters.
